Description
About the role
We're looking for an experienced, hands-on Platform Engineer to help build and operate our OpenStack cloud on Kubernetes. The role is a good fit if you have strong Linux and networking skills, practical Kubernetes experience, and enjoy tracing complex problems across system boundaries. You don't need previous OpenStack experience, but you do need the curiosity to learn how the platform works under the hood.
We run OpenStack with a Kubernetes operator we've built ourselves. We also develop OpenStack networking features and maintain our own CI/CD pipelines. The work spans the stack, from host configuration to helping users investigate application issues running on OpenStack. You'll contribute across these areas and can develop deeper expertise in the parts that interest you the most.
What you'll do
- Develop and maintain our Kubernetes operator for deploying and managing OpenStack.
- Build and operate OpenStack networking with OVN/OVS and BGP.
- Troubleshoot issues across the stack, from disks and network performance to failing services.
- Configure and tune hosts.
- Improve CI/CD pipelines and test environments.
- Keep monitoring and alerting useful.
- Work with the OpenStack code, including changes to upstream projects.
What you bring
- Strong Linux fundamentals: Talos OS, kernel tuning, understanding of cgroups and namespaces and reading logs.
- Good understanding of Linux networking, such as routing, policy routing, VRFs, bridges, VLAN/VXLAN/GENEVE, MTU, and tools like ip, tcpdump and nftables.
- Hands-on Kubernetes experience, including debugging networking, storage and failing workloads.
- Working knowledge of Python and Bash scripting, and Git.
- A methodical approach to troubleshooting: you narrow a problem down step by step instead of guessing.
Useful, but not required
We don't expect anyone to know all of these, two or three areas are a great start.
- OpenStack internals, especially Neutron, Nova and Cinder.
- OVN/OVS including logical flows, ovn-trace, northbound and southbound databases.
- Datacenter routing with BGP and EVPN, for example using FRR.
- Go and Kubernetes controller development (controller-runtime, kubebuilder or CRDs).
- Helm, GitLab CI, container image builds.
- Storage performance with Ceph and understanding latency, IOPS and throughput.
- Prometheus and Grafana as monitoring solutions.
- Ansible or other configuration management solutions.
Who might enjoy this role
You might come from network engineering and want to work closer to software, Kubernetes platform engineering and want to learn OpenStack, or OpenStack operations and want to develop the platform itself. We also value people who enjoy reading source code to understand why something behaves as it does, and who write clear notes and documentation.
