Platform Engineer
Field: Edge Infrastructure, Container Orchestration & DevOps
About YachtCloud
It is 9 pm on a superyacht anchored off the Bahamas. A guest picks up the iPad in their cabin, dims the lights, closes the blinds and signs in to Netflix to watch a film on the big screen. The TV guide shows tonight's programmes from the guest's home country, up to date to the minute.
On the bridge, the captain follows the yacht's position on a live map. In the crew mess, the chief stewardess checks tomorrow's rota in CrewBoard and sees who has signed off on the safety drill.
None of them think about IT infrastructure. Yet every one of those moments depends on it. The cabin controls and media run on a server on board, sometimes with nothing more than a patchy satellite link. The sign-in, the TV guide data and the map tiles come from our Kubernetes cluster in the cloud. When it all works, nobody notices.
Making sure our platform always works, on every yacht we serve, anywhere on earth no matter in which time zone.
At YachtCloud, we build the media delivery, environmental controls, and guest-facing technology installed on private superyachts. The real technical catch: our software must run identical code paths whether it is connected to high-speed fiber ashore, running over a high-latency satellite link, or completely cut off from the outside world on local vessel hardware.
We are looking for a dedicated Platform Engineer to take hands-on ownership of how these services get packaged, deployed, and kept alive across both cloud platforms and local yacht installations.
The Role
Working shoulder-to-shoulder with our Product Management team, you make sure our microservices run predictably, deploy without drama, and don't fall over when a vessel loses external connectivity.
What you will own day-to-day:
- Cluster Ops: Stand up, configure, and maintain Kubernetes environments across managed cloud (AWS).
- Service Packaging: Sit down with developers to containerize services the right way—reasonable CPU/memory bounds, sensible health probes, multi-stage Docker builds, and zero hidden assumptions about local persistent disks.,
- GitOps & Releases: Build and look after the deployment flow using GitLab CI, GitOps tooling (ArgoCD or Flux) alongside Helm charts or Kustomize setups, so pushes are deterministic and easily rolled back.
- Monitoring & Health: Hook up Prometheus, Grafana, so we can spot resource leaks and broken services quickly—even on systems that don't have constant outbound telemetry.
- Security Hygiene: As IT security is becoming increasingly important, we are continuously looking to strengthen the security measures we deploy.
Who We Are Looking For
We would like to welcome someone who treats Kubernetes as plumbing rather than an identity. If you care more about whether a service actually recovers after a reboot than about chasing the latest CNCF buzzword, this will suit you well.
- Production Mileage: At least 3 years working with container workloads on Kubernetes in real environments. You know what broke, why it broke, and how you to fix it.
- Packaging & Delivery: Daily comfort with Helm or Kustomize, tied into a working GitOps workflow.
- Linux Fundamentals: You are comfortable working directly in the Shell. You understand container runtimes (containerd/Docker), Linux networking (DNS, routing, packet flow), and lightweight distributions like k3sand Kubernetes.
- Practical Scripting: You reach for Bash, Python, or Go when you need to automate routine maintenance or glue systems together.
- Clear Communication: Comfortable talking trade-offs with both developers and hardware-oriented engineers. Fluent English is required; Dutch is handy to have.
What We Offer
- A central engineering seat in an established, tech focused business building hardware and software used worldwide.
- Direct technical ownership: you make architecture decisions without sitting through endless approval boards.
- Role based at our office in the Van Nelle Fabriek in Rotterdam, with flexibility around your weekly rhythm (32 to 40 hours).
- Good compensation package with solid secondary benefits and travel reimbursement.
- Direct access to founders, engineers, and real vessel projects without middle management layers.
