Description
Senior Cloud Native Platform Engineer
The Role
Are you an experienced Cloud Native engineer who enjoys building, operating, and evolving production-grade platforms and applications?
We are looking for a Senior Cloud Native Platform Engineer to help develop and operate reliable, scalable infrastructure and applications. You will work across Kubernetes platforms, automation, infrastructure management, and cloud-native software development, helping ensure that production services remain stable while continuing to evolve.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who understands that running software in production involves much more than deploying it. You will contribute to the design, implementation, operation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of the systems that support critical services.
What You'll Do
- Operate and evolve production Kubernetes platforms: Work with production Kubernetes environments, including multi-cluster platforms, where reliability, availability, and safe change are essential.
- Own software throughout its lifecycle: Maintain and improve software running in production over time, addressing technical debt, operational issues, upgrades, and changing service requirements—not simply deploying applications and moving on.
- Plan and manage scale: Help evolve platform architecture and capacity to accommodate growing workloads, changing demand, and increasing operational complexity.
- Deliver safe changes: Plan and implement platform and application changes, upgrades, and deployments while minimising customer impact and operational risk.
- Automate infrastructure and delivery: Build and maintain GitOps workflows and CI/CD pipelines using technologies such as Argo CD, Ansible, and Terraform.
- Develop engineering tools and services: Design, implement, and maintain APIs, automation, and platform management components using Go, Python, or Bash.
- Troubleshoot complex problems: Investigate incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable solutions that improve platform stability and reduce recurring issues.
- Maintain observability and reliability: Develop and operate monitoring, alerting, logging, and metrics solutions using technologies including Grafana, Prometheus, Thanos, Alertmanager, and Elasticsearch.
- Support production operations: Participate in a 24/7 on-call rota, helping maintain service availability and responding effectively to operational incidents.
- Collaborate on continuous improvement: Work with other engineers to improve platform architecture, automation, operational processes, and engineering standards.
What We're Looking For
- Extensive practical experience with Kubernetes and the operation of production-grade environments.
- Experience maintaining and evolving software in production over an extended period, including troubleshooting, upgrades, operational improvements, and lifecycle management.
- A solid understanding of multi-cluster Kubernetes environments, including their operational challenges, reliability considerations, and scaling requirements.
- The ability to explain the scale and complexity of the environments you have personally worked on, including cluster numbers, workload types, operational responsibilities, and relevant availability or capacity considerations.
- Strong experience with Linux-based infrastructure and systems administration.
- Practical experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management using Ansible and Terraform.
- Experience with GitOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for reliable, repeatable software delivery.
- Software development or scripting experience, preferably with Go or Python, and the ability to develop and maintain tools used in operational environments.
- A good understanding of Cloud Native principles, microservices, distributed systems, and production service reliability.
- A methodical approach to fault diagnosis, problem-solving, and implementing long-term fixes.
- An understanding of observability and monitoring, including metrics, logs, dashboards, and alerting.
Experience With Some of the Following Technologies Is Desirable
- Kubernetes and platform infrastructure: Production Kubernetes operations and cloud-native infrastructure.
- Infrastructure as Code and automation: Terraform and Ansible.
- GitOps and delivery: Argo CD and CI/CD pipelines.
- Programming and scripting: Go, Python, and Bash.
- Web servers and traffic management: HAProxy, Nginx, Apache, and Traefik.
- Databases and data services: PostgreSQL, MariaDB, and Redis.
- Observability and monitoring: Grafana, Prometheus, Thanos, and Alertmanager.
- Logging and search: Elasticsearch and its ecosystem.
- Dependency management: Renovate.
What Will Set You Apart
We are particularly interested in engineers who can demonstrate genuine operational ownership of production systems.
You should be comfortable discussing systems you have personally operated, the challenges encountered at scale, how you approached incidents, and how you introduced changes without compromising reliability.
