Lead UAV Design Engineer

Alea Defense & Space is a Portuguese company building Obsidian, a lethal uncrewed combat aircraft with an AI targeting and engagement core, human on the loop. Obsidian is moving from concept to a quarter-scale prototype, and we are hiring the founding team that will design, build, integrate and fly it. This is a founding team position, and it comes with equity. The role • Lead the overall design and development of the quarter-scale Obsidian prototype. • Own the aircraft configuration, aerodynamic optimisation, weight management, performance analysis, CAD design, 3D modelling and design integration across all systems. What you bring • A bachelor's or master's degree in aerospace, aeronautical or mechanical engineering. • At least five years of relevant experience in UAV, aerospace, advanced air mobility or aircraft development programmes. • Advanced proficiency in CAD tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX or Fusion 360, or an equivalent, is required. Where and how Hybrid, with a preference for candidates based in Portugal or willing to relocate. Regular on-site participation is required during design reviews, integration activities and flight-test campaigns. Asked of every role • Experience in aerospace, UAVs, defence, aviation or advanced technology is highly desirable. • A strong command of English is required; Portuguese is an advantage. • A willingness to support prototype development, manufacturing, systems integration, ground testing and flight testing as the programme requires. • The ability to work in a fast-paced start-up and contribute across disciplines while the aircraft is in early development. • Candidates must be legally eligible to work in the EU, preferably in Portugal, or be willing to relocate if selected. Terms • Indicative salary: €55,000 to €75,000 gross a year. • Equity: yes, on terms set out with the offer. • Salaries depend on closing our funding round.
