Staff Software Engineer

About the Role Metis Reasoning is developing AI reasoning technologies across a range of verticals based on a novel architecture for next generation AI. Our team brings together expertise from frontier AI, biotech, enterprise software, defence, and aerospace industries. We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Los Angeles or London who enjoys solving difficult technical problems and building high-quality software systems. You will work closely with researchers, infrastructure engineers and application specialists to develop software that brings advanced AI capabilities into production. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy thinking deeply about software design, algorithms, concurrency, distributed systems and system architecture. Responsibilities - Design, implement, test, and maintain software systems across our software platform. - Build backend services, APIs, and supporting application infrastructure. - Translate technical concepts and research outputs into reliable software implementations. - Develop software capable of efficiently handling large-scale reasoning and inference workloads while operating reliably in multi-threaded and distributed environments. - Participate in code reviews and technical discussions. - Contribute to development of core algorithms. - Contribute to the development of AI-assisted coding guidelines, best practices, and tooling. Required Qualifications - Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience. - 3–7 years of professional software engineering experience. - Strong proficiency in one or more modern programming languages such as Rust, Elixir, Python, C, Java, F#, Haskell or similar. - Solid understanding of functional and object-oriented software design principles. - Experience designing and implementing concurrent or parallel software systems. - Experience with Google Cloud, AWS, Azure or similar cloud platforms. - Experience using AI coding assistants (Claude, Codex) Nice-to-Haves - Experience with machine learning, AI, or scientific computing. - Experience working in an early-stage startup. - Experience working as part of a distributed team. - DevOps experience. Location Los Angeles or London. Salary Range $180,000-220,000 USD in Los Angeles, £100,000-130,000 GBP in London.
