Description
Lead Cloud Engineer
Salary: £100,000 per annum
Location: Fully remote (UK-based applicants)
Contract: Permanent, full-time
About the Role We are recruiting on behalf of a fast-growing UK provider of digital-first mental health and neurodevelopmental healthcare services. Technology sits at the heart of how patients are assessed, supported and cared for, and our client is now seeking a Lead Cloud Engineer to own, evolve and scale the cloud platform that underpins its clinical and operational systems.
This is a hands-on leadership position. You will set the technical direction for cloud infrastructure, lead a team of engineers, and ensure that the platform is secure, resilient and compliant with the standards expected of a regulated healthcare environment. You will work closely with product, clinical, information governance and wider engineering teams to deliver services that patients and clinicians can rely on.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and lead the cloud architecture strategy, ensuring platforms are scalable, secure, cost-effective and highly available
- Design, build and maintain cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform, Bicep or CloudFormation)
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of cloud and DevOps engineers, setting standards for quality, delivery and best practice
- Own CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation, enabling fast, safe and repeatable releases
- Implement robust monitoring, alerting, logging and incident response processes; lead on root cause analysis and continuous improvement
- Champion security by design, including identity and access management, network security, encryption, vulnerability management and secrets handling
- Ensure platforms meet healthcare compliance requirements, including UK GDPR, the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT), and relevant NHS and CQC expectations
- Lead disaster recovery, backup and business continuity planning, including regular testing
- Manage cloud costs through FinOps practices, tagging, forecasting and optimisation
- Evaluate and introduce new tools and technologies where they add clear value
- Act as a senior technical point of contact for stakeholders, translating business and clinical needs into technical solutions
- Maintain clear technical documentation, runbooks and architecture records
Essential Skills and Experience
- Significant experience in cloud engineering, DevOps or platform engineering, including time in a technical lead or senior position
- Deep, hands-on expertise in at least one major cloud platform (AWS or Azure preferred; GCP considered)
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code and configuration management
- Proven track record building and managing CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps or Jenkins)
- Solid working knowledge of containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes or managed equivalents)
- Strong understanding of cloud security, networking, identity and access management
- Experience with observability tooling (e.g. Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch or Azure Monitor)
- Experience leading, coaching or mentoring engineers
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics to non-technical colleagues
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable
- Experience in healthcare, health-tech or another regulated sector
- Knowledge of DSPT, ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials Plus or similar frameworks
- Relevant cloud certifications (e.g. AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Kubernetes CKA/CKAD, Terraform Associate)
- Experience with serverless architectures, event-driven systems and data platforms
- Scripting or development experience (Python, Go, Bash or PowerShell)
- Experience supporting high-availability, patient-facing services
What's on Offer
- Salary of £100,000
- Fully remote working for UK-based candidates
- The opportunity to shape the technology foundations of a mission-driven healthcare organisation
- A genuine leadership role with real influence on strategy and technical direction
- A collaborative, supportive culture focused on improving access to mental health and neurodevelopmental care
